Watermouth Castle
Located just off the A399 between Ilfracombe and Combe Martin, Watermouth Castle is one of the most unique family attractions in the UK. Unlike standard theme parks, it offers a charming blend of Victorian history, nostalgic amusements, and beautiful landscaped gardens, all overlooking the secluded Watermouth Cove.
A Glimpse into the Past
Originally built in the mid-19th century for the Bassett family, the castle is a stunning example of Victorian Gothic architecture. Today, the “Castle” part of the attraction serves as a living museum. As guests enter, they step back in time to an era of opulence and mechanical wonder.
The Victorian Kitchens: See how the great feasts of the 1800s were prepared, complete with copper pans and vintage utensils.
The Hall of Curios: A fascinating collection of antique toys, slot machines, and bizarre artifacts that the family collected over generations.
The Underground Theater: Experience the famous Watermouth Snail Ride or watch the Water Organ—a mechanical musical fountain synchronized with lights and music that remains a highlight for every visitor.
Family Fun & Adventure
Once you step outside the castle walls, the estate transforms into a playground of “gentle” adventure. It is specifically designed for families with children, focusing on imagination rather than high-speed thrills.
The Merry-Go-Land: A collection of traditional rides, including a carousel, a tilted house, and the “Big River” ride where children can captain their own boats.
Gnome Land: A whimsical walkthrough village inhabited by hundreds of garden gnomes, complete with their own little houses, school, and workshop. It’s a nostalgic favorite that has been part of the park for decades.
The Maze and Adventure Play: Let the kids burn off energy in the large outdoor play areas, featuring climbing frames, slides, and a challenging hedge maze.
The Gardens and Watermouth Cove
Beyond the rides, the Watermouth estate covers 50 acres of beautifully maintained gardens. The location is perched right above Watermouth Cove, one of the most sheltered and picturesque harbors in North Devon.
Scenic Walks: The gardens are filled with rare trees and vibrant flowerbeds, offering a peaceful escape from the busier play areas.
The Viewing Point: Make sure to head to the edge of the estate for a panoramic view of the Cove. On a clear day, you can watch the colorful boats bobbing in the water and look out across the Bristol Channel.
